Our Business

Masa & Joyce was originally established in 1978 by its founders Masa and Joyce Tobaru.  Masa was born and raised in Okinawa and came to Hawaii seeking a better opportunity.  When he arrived in Hawaii he worked as a fisherman catching Aku or skip jack tuna .  Joyce, also from Okinawa, always had interest in cooking ever since she could remember.  She worked at a restaurant in Okinawa before coming to Hawaii and continued to work at restaurants and school cafeterias here in Hawaii.  The two put their areas of interest and expertise together and came up with the idea to combine a fish market with an okazuya (Japanese Deli) and the rest is history. 

Who We Are

Today, Masa and Joyce is run by their son Alvin Tobaru with his wife Mari.  Alvin and Mari established their business Served With Aloha, LLC, doing business as Masa & Joyce in 2005 and have been running the shop ever since.  They believed in carrying on the family business that Masa and Joyce worked so hard to build. 

Besides running Masa & Joyce, Alvin plays in a band called KOOLAU BREEZE.  Koolau Breeze plays various music ranging from American top 40 hits from the 70's to 90's, Japanese, Hawaiian, and originals.  Visit Koolau Breeze's page on FaceBook for bookings or live performance schedules. 

 Mari makes ribbon and crochet leis and does workshops in Japan teaching the leis.
